International Nuclear Science Olympiad

” International Nuclear Science Olympiad “

Statutes

Adopted on August 1, 2024, in Clark, Pampanga, Philippines

First amendment on August 3, 2025, in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia

1

Recognizing the importance of nuclear science and technology in contemporary society and the need to nurture a new generation of scientists committed to its peaceful applications, an annual competition for high school students was established, called the International Nuclear Science Olympiad.

2

The Olympiad is organized by the national nuclear agency of the host country or the relevant ministry of education, in coordination with the International Atomic Energy Agency. The host country must ensure equal opportunities for participation and proper hospitality for all invited delegations, regardless of political differences.

3

Each participating country sends a delegation typically consisting of up to four students and two accompanying leaders. Delegation leaders should have a general understanding of nuclear science or physics and be capable of understanding and solving Olympiad-level problems.

4

English is the official language of the Olympiad, and all problems, solutions, and official communications are provided in English.

5

The competition consists of two main components:

  • Theoretical test: Consisting of three to four questions on the fundamentals of nuclear physics, radiation sciences, reactor principles, and nuclear energy applications in medicine, agriculture, and the environment.
  • Experimental/Practical test: Consisting of one or two laboratory tasks or simulations involving measurement, analysis, or problem-solving related to nuclear science.

Each stage generally lasts 4 to 5 hours, with at least one rest day between them.

6

Prizes are awarded to the top participants based on their total scores, including gold, silver, and bronze medals, as well as certificates of merit and special awards for outstanding innovation or teamwork.

7

The organizing committee is responsible for preparing the problems, grading answers, and publishing official proceedings. Each delegation receives a detailed report after the competition.

8

The International Council, composed of delegation leaders from all participating countries, oversees academic fairness, approves the problems, and votes on major organizational decisions.

9

Participation in the International Nuclear Science Olympiad signifies acceptance of these statutes by the educational or scientific authority of each participating country.

Awards and Medals

  • All participants are ranked according to their individual scores; no official team scores are awarded.
  • Gold medals are awarded to the top 12.5% of participants (rounded to the nearest whole number).
  • Gold or silver medals are awarded to the top 35.0% of participants (rounded to the nearest whole number).
  • Gold, silver, or bronze medals are awarded to the top 65.0% of participants (rounded to the nearest whole number).
  • The exact number of medals is determined after reviewing the results without knowing participants' identities.
  • Special awards are given to the student with the highest score in the theoretical part, the student with the highest score in the experimental part, and the student with the highest overall total. This award carries the title "Nuclear Science Ambassador (NSA)".
