1
Recognizing the importance of nuclear science and technology in contemporary society and the need to nurture a new generation of scientists committed to its peaceful uses, an annual competition for high school students, called the International Nuclear Science Olympiad, was established.
2
The Olympiad is organized by the host country's national nuclear agency or relevant ministry of education, in coordination with the International Atomic Energy Agency. The organizing country must ensure equal opportunities of participation and hospitality for all invited delegations, regardless of political differences.
3
Each participating country sends a delegation, usually consisting of a maximum of four students and two The accompanying leaders must have a general understanding of nuclear science or physics and be capable of understanding and solving problems at the Olympiad level.
4
English is the official language of the Olympiad, and all problems, solutions, and official correspondence are presented in English.
5
The competition consists of two main elements:
- Theoretical Examination: Consists of three to four questions on the fundamentals of nuclear physics, radiation science, reactor principles, and the applications of nuclear energy in medicine, agriculture, and the environment.
- The Experimental/Practical Examination: Consists of one or two laboratory tasks or simulations involving measurement, analysis, or problem-solving related to nuclear science.
Each stage typically lasts 4 to 5 hours, with at least one rest day between them.
Prizes are awarded to the top competitors based on their overall score. Their points, and the prizes include gold, silver, and bronze medals, as well as certificates of appreciation and special awards for outstanding innovation or outstanding teamwork.
- 7 The Organizing Committee prepares the questions, corrects the answers, and publishes the official proceedings. Each delegation receives a detailed report after the competition.
- 8 The International Council, composed of the heads of delegations from all participating countries, oversees academic fairness, approves questions, and votes on major organizational decisions.
- 9 Participation in the International Nuclear Science Olympiad implies acceptance of these statutes by the responsible educational or scientific authority in each participating country.
- Awards and Medals 1.1 All participants are ranked according to their individual scores; no official scores are awarded for teams. 1.1.1 Gold medals are awarded to the top 12.5% of Competitors (number rounded to the nearest whole number).
- 1,1,2
- Gold or silver medals are awarded to the top 35.0% of competitors (number rounded to the nearest whole number).
- 1,1,3
- Gold, silver, or bronze medals are awarded to the top 65.0% of competitors (number rounded to the nearest whole number).
- 1,2
- The exact number of medals is determined after a review of the results without knowing the identities of the participants.
- 1,3
- A special award is given to the student who achieves the highest score in the theory section, the student who achieves the highest score in the experimental section, and the student with the highest overall score. This award carries the title "Nuclear Science Ambassador (NSA)."
